Sydney

+ Harbour beaches

Although most visitors go to Sydney’s ocean beaches, there are a number of charming harbour beaches awaiting to be explored.  They are less subject to waves or currents and offer a picturesque window into life on and around Sydney Harbour.

Shark Bay

Situated in a beautiful park in the exclusive area of Vaucluse is a sandy beach that has to be seen to be believed.  There is an enclosed area where you can swim without fear of sharks, a multitude of picnic spots and a famous kiosk.  The rocks on the eastern side provide great opportunities for exploring.  The park is also the starting point for the Hermitage Foreshore Walk, one of Sydney’s finest harbourside walks with sweeping city views across the harbour.

Watsons Bay

Watsons Bay is a beautiful little cove with an old style swimming pool enclosure.  It has a village atmosphere and feels as though it has been there forever.  Swimming isn’t the only attraction in the area: the famous Doyle’s Seafood Restaurant has its home here – the perfect place for beer battered fish and chips.

Camp Cove

Camp Cove is a delightful part of Sydney Harbour.  It is one of the harbour beaches and adjoins the suburb of Watsons Bay, a delightful place with a well-preserved sense of a village. The walk from Watsons Bay to Camp Cove takes about 10 minutes.

Balmoral Beach

Located in the exclusive area known as the Lower North Shore is another of Sydney’s  famous beaches. Balmoral Beach was the site of a fatal shark attack in the 1930’s but now has a fully enclosed swimming area and provides safe swimming.  The beach is bordered by a delightful park and the historic rotunda is a good place to shelter from the sun and read a book.  No visit to Balmoral would be complete without a visit to the Bather’s Pavilion restaurant and café for a meal.
