+ overview
Navagio Beach is a spectacular beach nestled between high cliffs. Located on the northwestern shore of the Ionian island of Zakynthos (Zante), the isolated sandy cove is one of the most famous beaches in Greece. The beach is home to the wreck of the alleged smuggler ship Panagiotis, which lost engine power in 1981 and was washed ashore in the magnificent small bay. That is why Navagio Beach is often referred to as Shipwreck Bay or Smuggler’s Cove. Zakynthos Island is characterized by its sheer limestone cliffs, white sand beaches, and crystal-clear water, which draws thousands of visitors every year. Unfortunately, Navagio Beach is no exception. At some time of the day, large cruise ships anchor there and the beach gets heavily crowded. Make sure you go there either early in the morning or in the afternoon after 3pm (the least crowded months are May and November). Going to Navagio Beach during off-peak times ensures you will have the beach pretty much to yourself.
+ see & do
As Navagio is small and isolated, there is not much to do on the beach itself. Just relax, sunbath, swim, snorkel and enjoy the scenery. If you are with kids, beware of the wreck, as it is very sharp and rusty. For the ultimate picture, you may want to walk up to the small viewing platform and get the amazing views on the beach from the top of the cliffs, some 180m (600ft) above the wreck. That is where most of the picture postcard shots are taken from, because of the better perspective it offers compared to being up close and personal on the beach itself. To get there, just follow the signs to the Agios Gergio Kremnao monastery, then use the road to your right to get to the viewing platform.
+ get there
Nestled between cliffs, Navagio Beach is only accessible by sea. Boats departing from Porto Vromi in the south or the harbor of Saint Nikolas in the north-east of the island will take you to the famous strip of beach. More commonly, cruise and tour boats operate from the harbor of Zakynthos, the capital city, and anchor hourly at Navagio Beach.
